Are Your Beliefs About Money Keeping You Poor?

_1647Before money was in the form of paper or coins, people traded goods of value such as cows, fish, rice, salt, weapons, and clothing. The value of money is what we put on it. While our government has decided the amount a piece of paper or coin is worth, individuals place an additional, intangible value on it based on upbringing and experience.

For many people, money has emotion attached to it. As children, we observe how our families react and interact with money, and we receive messages about how they perceive it, which forms our money “beliefs”. See if any of these sound familiar: Money is the root of all evil, troublesome, difficult to get, hard to keep. Having money equals power, control, happiness, security, and solves problems. Are any of these your beliefs?

Money is neither good nor bad; it’s neutral, simply a tool that we use for the exchange of goods and services. However, that is not how most of us perceive it.

Do you have an emotional charge about money? What are your feelings about wealth or lack of it? Does your perception of money change in different circumstances? Do you feel that your self worth fluctuates according to your bank account?

Here is an exercise that might clarify your perception of money and its potential for change:

  • Visualize a pile of cash in front of you. How big is the pile? How does it make you feel?
  • Substitute the cash with one of the examples of ancestral trade before money, like exotic spices or shells. Do you still have the same reaction to your alternate pile of wealth? Now, how do you feel about having more, giving some of it away, or saving it?
  • If you feel more comfortable or less comfortable that your wealth isn’t money as we currently know it, examine why that is.
  • Do your feelings about money support you? If not, ask yourself are you willing to examine those feelings about money and adjust your perspective to a more supportive position.

Consider what adjustments around money you could make in both the long and short term. Perhaps it is focusing more on where your money goes each month (budgeting, consulting a financial advisor) or perhaps focusing less (if you feel you control it too much). Maybe you could adopt a positive mantra on money and wealth to say throughout the day, such as: Money flows freely, easily, and abundantly to me.

While changes toward your desired view on money may not occur overnight, clarifying what your current views are is a significant step.

Living in Abundance

“Everything you are seeking is seeking you in return. Therefore, everything you want is already yours. It is simply a matter of becoming more aware of what you already possess.” ~ Bob Proctor

What is abundance? Abundance can mean different things to different people. Having more than enough of money, material things, happiness, success, friends, free time. It can be all these things, but a simpler way to look at abundance is…feeling satisfaction NOW.

Why is that so important? Like attracts like. If we are attempting to manifest abundance without first feeling abundant—if we are coming from a state of scarcity or lack—it is synonymous to trying to attract hummingbirds to your bird house with vinegar instead of nectar.

Enjoying abundance comes from first being in a state of gratitude. Enjoy what you have…right now. What is going well in your life? What are you grateful for? It could be gratitude for the relationship you have with your kids; your ability to love and receive love; the feeling you get when you open your eyes to a sunny day. It could be gratitude for your comfortable bed, the perfectly al dente pasta at lunch, the outfit that makes you feel like a million bucks. Whenever it’s difficult to get into a place of gratitude—we all have rough days—be even more basic: be thankful for clean water, electricity, the roof over your head…things we take for granted that are not universal givens.

Once we are in a state of gratitude, we realize our life is ALREADY abundant. Know it as a fact. Tell yourself daily that you enjoy a life of abundance that will always be abundant. How does that make you feel? Joyful? Peaceful? Excited? Honor that feeling.

If stepping into a state of gratitude is a challenge, or you don’t often do so, don’t worry. Gratitude is a habit we can learn by practicing it every day. Pick a time each day that you will be able to carry out your practice. Think of what is most reasonable and realistic for you. Perhaps you can awaken a few minutes earlier to sit quietly and think of all that you are grateful for in that moment. Or maybe you can use the commute to work as an opportunity to appreciate your abundance. Maybe a few minutes dedicated to writing down your gratitudes before bedtime works better for you. You could set reminders on your phone to prompt you throughout the day to think of one gratitude. Choose the method that’s right for you and make it a daily practice.

If you create abundance in your inner life, you will experience abundance in your outer life. Developing a constant awareness for the things that are good will lead to positive thinking, which has the power to attract more positivity. There is an unending supply of abundance for everyone. The first step toward an abundant life is knowing you already have one.

Understanding the Law of Attraction

What is the Law of Attraction? A simple explanation would be that you get what you are focused on. In other words; when you think a thought, you create a feeling— which in turn creates a vibration throughout your cells throughout your body and continues to vibrate that frequency out into the universe. This vibration will attract other vibrations that are of the same or similar frequencies.

By changing your thoughts you can adapt your feelings, which will change the vibration that is resonating out into the universe— ultimately attracting different people, objects, money, places, and/or experiences to you.

The easiest way to create what you desire is to use The Law of Attraction. When you find yourself feeling lack, shift you’re thinking to that of abundance. If you find yourself feeling hopeless, shift your thinking to what you imagine a positive thought would be and focus on it. If you find yourself feeling sorry for yourself, have a pity party, then, write a list of 5 or more appreciations and focus on them. When you are feeling anger or impatience, shift your thoughts to those of compassion for whom or what you were thinking negative thoughts about.

Remember if your thoughts and feelings are focused on the lack of something, or on doubt of possibility, than the doubt is the vibration that is put out into the Universe and that is what you will attract back to you.

Here are some affirmations that work:

For Wealth –  I am moving towards using my skills in a way that will be fulfilling and bring me abundance.

For Relationships – I am in the process of having relationships in my life expand into ongoing boundless joy.

For Attracting a Partner – I am in the process of attracting the most perfect person to me, who will shower my life with joy, love and boundless pleasure.

For Health – My body supports me with love.

For Compassion – I am Love.

Set your intention to vibrate positively and attract what you want into your life. Always examine how you are feeling after you state what you want. Feeling wonderful is what you are looking for!
